An invaluable tenet of any success-minded cult is the notion that the current human society is in a state of moral turpitude. Statistics can be easily twisted (or invented) to demonstrate a recent sharp increase in crime, drug abuse, globalism, premarital sex, divorce, homosexuality, suicide, devil-worship, atheism, heavy metal, or other dire portents of a world in decline. Note the tremendous success of the media and religious right in exploiting isolated acts of school violence to draw millions to their empty cause. When society is mired in iniquity and you and your small band of friends are the only "good" people remaining, it makes one feel rather special. An air of urgency also now surrounds the goals of the cult. Be especially sure to cite statistics which show how the "good" people of the world are now being relentlessly persecuted by the "bad" people.
![]() This idea can in time be extrapolated into a broad us-vs.-them mentality. The cult embodies absolute "Good" while the surrounding society is "evil." Not only is this concept a great lure for new recruits (especially among the rebellious and underprivileged), but you are now justified in any crime you commit against "them," the cosmic Other. Groups are always very successful by throwing around terms like "heathens," "perverts," "infidel," "Beast," "unsaved," "heretics," "unawakened," "uninitiated," and "antichrist" to dehumanize non-members and define themselves as virtuous by comparison. Governments usually respond to your position (and the subsequent isolationism) with bold displays of force. Cleverly use this to simply bolster the idea that "they" are out to get you because they are (for whatever reason) insidious, "bad people."
